How to make a 684 × 883 px photo for MOS (fixing the upload error)

The 684 x 883 pixel message is a common reason an application in MOS stalls at the photo step. It is not about the quality of your picture — it is about the numbers. Here is how to get them right.

When the photo you attach to an application does not fit, the MOS portal shows the message “Fotografia musi mieć rozdzielczość 684 x 883 pikseli. Możesz dodać jedynie plik w formacie JPG.” (The photo must have a resolution of 684 × 883 pixels. You can only add a JPG file.) It means the file failed the automatic technical check — pixel dimensions or format. The content of the photo — face, background, lighting — has not been evaluated yet.

What 684 × 883 pixels means

It is the digital equivalent of a 35 × 45 mm biometric photo at about 500 dpi. The aspect ratio is 35:45 — close to, but slightly wider than, a 3:4 portrait phone picture. The portal’s message names 684×883; the official rule of the Office for Foreigners (UdSC) says the file must be at least 684×883 px, in 35 × 45 mm proportions. A file of exactly 684×883 satisfies both, so it is the safe choice.

  • Dimensions: 684 px wide × 883 px high (portrait).
  • Format: JPG/JPEG only. PNG, HEIC, WEBP and PDF are rejected regardless of size.
  • File size: 2.5 MB at most.

Why a phone photo fails

Phones save pictures at 3:4 or 9:16, typically at 3000 × 4000 px or more, and iPhones often use HEIC. None of those match 684×883. Shrinking the photo in your gallery does not help, because the aspect ratio stays the same — and forcing the dimensions without cropping stretches the face.

The correct order is therefore: crop to 35:45 first, with the face filling 70–80% of the photo, then resize to 684×883, then save as JPG under 2.5 MB.

How to make a 684×883 file in 2 minutes

  1. Upload the phone photo to the cropper below (HEIC works too).
  2. The photo is framed automatically. If needed, drag and zoom until the eyes and chin sit on the guides. The 35:45 ratio is locked, so it cannot go wrong.
  3. Check the watermarked preview, then pay 19 zł and download the clean file. It is a JPG of exactly 684×883, under 2.5 MB.
  4. Go back to MOS and attach the file again.

If you prefer to do it by hand

In Paint (Windows) or Preview (macOS), first crop the photo to a 35:45 ratio (for example 1400 × 1800 px), and only then resize it to 684 × 883 and save as JPG. If you skip the crop and type the dimensions straight away, the program stretches the face: the file passes the technical check, but the voivodeship office can question the photo later, when the application has been sent and can no longer be edited in MOS — and ask you for a new one, which delays the case.

Check before re-uploading

  • The face is not stretched or squashed and fills 70–80% of the photo.
  • The background is light and even; the photo is less than 6 months old.
